Burning Stories is a collaborative and ambitious research project built together with the Burning Man Project and academics from Aalto University.Burning Man is a year-around global civic movement where the flagship event isan annual 70,000 participant strong event in Nevada desert. This event is described as an experiment in community and art, influenced by ten main principles: radical inclusion, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy and leave no trace.Regarding research, the aim of Burning Stories is to understand the rapidly growing global Burning Man community by collecting stories on personal experiences related to the event.
My longer-term aim is to help co-creating an academic community around the initiative, and foster the interaction of science and arts via new types of scientific dissemination methods and seminars. The first of Burning Stories - research seminar was hosted by Demos Helsinki in May 2018 and the project was launched globally in July same year and it will be developed further in Stanford University during my 2019 stay there as a visiting scholar.Early findings were presented in Burning Progeny symposium 11/2018 atUniversity of Fribourg, Switzerland.
